How We Can help
Family Therapy
Families are our greatest resource for emotional health and very often for practical support too. At times family relationships become strained for all sorts of reasons, often with a mix of internal and external factors.
Family therapists are trained to bring an awareness of how these internal and external pressures impact family life and individual coping. The therapist will also help individuals to open up their communication, build emotional strength and enhance problem-solving capability.
Counselling Approaches:
- Integrative Counselling
- Systemic Counselling
Your counsellor may also draw upon tools and techniques from other counselling approaches.

Session Information
Once you have made the decision to have family therapy your therapist will contact you to discuss what you want to achieve from your sessions. You will be asked what you are seeking family therapy for and explore your goals as a family. The therapist will also take this time to sign their paperwork with you, explaining their contracts and policies.
During your initial appointment, the therapist will explain what family therapy is and how it works, taking time to answer any questions you may have. At this point, the therapist will explain that family therapy will typically involve the whole family, especially in early sessions. This allows the therapist to understand a number of viewpoints about the difficulties being experienced, and also to find out more about the strengths and helpful resources present in different family members. When things go well family members can alter the problem situation and help each other heal.
At the same time, there will usually be space for both individuals and parents to attend separate sessions where they can speak confidentially about issues they are facing and identify changes they wish to make or work towards.
As in any form of therapy, change may not happen overnight, so some degree of persistence is needed on all sides. The therapist will try to keep people on track in terms of what they want to achieve and will evaluate progress both during the work and after it has concluded. The amount of sessions needed varies for different people, some only need six to twelve sessions, whereas others use family therapy over a period of time.
If subsequent sessions are needed, these sessions will be used to reflect, discuss, and then conduct further sessions.
During your final session, the therapist will discuss with you your progress, thoughts, and feelings. At this stage, the therapist can provide you with techniques and tasks you can use to help sustain the progress you have made in sessions.
