Catherine van Maanen

Student Counsellor

About Me:

Catherine van Maanen is a Student Counsellor at Cherry Tree Therapy Centre in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

I practice an Integrative approach with a particular focus on the relational aspect. I thoroughly believe in the nurturing connection created between client and psychotherapist, and the importance of creating and holding a space for the client to explore the experiences that may unfold during the time together, in a safe, non-judgemental and empathetic and secure space. I believe every individual deserves to feel heard, listened to, seen and fundamentally, understood.

I have previously worked in art and retail fields before moving into training as a psychotherapist. However, a desire to create a safer, more accessible and healing environment for everyone is a drive that has permeated every role I have held. My interests developed from my involvement in creating art to explore my own mental wellbeing, and led to my creation of my own magazine, leading to me talking on mental health and wellbeing on panel talks for universities and self-love events. I was also nominated for my alma mater’s Alumni Award, created for alumni who had made an impactful contribution to the lives of others.

Through my personal principle of  ‘community over competition’, I believe in the healing and nourishing power of the relationship in and of itself. I believe that the client knows themselves and their experiences the most, therefore I am there to collaborate and facilitate and help the client meet the goals that they have set for the therapeutic journey and to use my own skills developed in my training to help explore both past and present concerns in the lives of clients in order to help establish a better present experience.

Being driven by a relational based integrative approach, I believe that therapy should be a space wherein one can leave the consulting room, and feel capable of taking on whatever difficulties may come the client’s way, armed with the tools they will need to approach these in a way that will not compromise their needs or health. My focus is equipping clients for their journey through life.

Starting therapy can be a nerve-wracking experience, therefore I offer safety and open-minded compassion to clients who are just starting out or returning after a break in therapy.

My particular areas of interest include:

  • Bereavement,
  • Eating disorders,
  • Depression,
  • Anxiety,
  • Low self-esteem,
  • Sudden loss – such as job or other impactful event,
  • PTSD/ C-PTSD,
  • Childhood trauma,
  • Mood disorders.
