I Feel Off But I Can’t Explain Why

I don’t feel right… but I don’t know why

You might not be able to point to anything specific.

Nothing has gone particularly wrong, and there hasn’t been a clear trigger. From the outside, things might even look fine. And yet, something doesn’t feel quite right.

You feel a bit off. Perhaps a little flat, or more easily overwhelmed than usual. You might notice you’re not enjoying things in the same way, or that everything feels slightly heavier than it should.

It’s a strange place to be, especially when you can’t explain it.

It’s harder when there isn’t a clear reason

When something obvious has happened, a loss, a breakup, a stressful period, it’s easier to understand why you feel the way you do.

But when there isn’t a clear reason, it can feel confusing.

You might start to question yourself. Wonder whether you’re overreacting, or whether you should just get on with things. You might even tell yourself that it’s not really something worth talking about.

And because you can’t quite explain it, it’s easy to push it to one side.

“Nothing’s wrong” doesn’t always mean everything’s okay

Often, these feelings aren’t dramatic. They tend to be quieter than that, which can make them easier to dismiss.

You might notice small shifts, feeling more irritable, having less energy, struggling to focus, or feeling slightly disconnected from yourself. On their own, each of these can seem insignificant. But over time, they can build into a sense that something isn’t quite right.

You don’t need a clear explanation to take it seriously

There’s a common idea that you need to have a defined problem before you reach out for support. Something you can explain clearly, or something that feels “serious enough”.

But that’s not usually how things begin.

More often, it starts with a feeling, a sense that something has shifted, even if you can’t yet put it into words. That, in itself, is enough.

Trying to work it out on your own can keep you stuck

When you’re not sure what’s going on, it’s natural to try to make sense of it by yourself.

You might go over things in your head, compare yourself to how you think you should feel, or try to ignore it and hope it passes. But without an outside perspective, it can become something that goes round in circles.

Starting without having the answer

You don’t need to arrive with a clear explanation, and you don’t need to know what kind of therapy you need.

What often helps is simply having a space where you can begin with something as simple as:

“I’m not quite sure what’s going on, but something doesn’t feel right.”

From there, things tend to become clearer.

A place to begin

At Cherry Tree Therapy Centre in Buckhurst Hill and Henley-on-Thames, we often speak to people who aren’t sure how to describe what they’re feeling, only that something feels off.

That’s not a problem. It’s usually where people start.

We’ll take the time to understand what’s going on and help you think through what might help, so you don’t have to work it out on your own.

If this sounds familiar

If you’ve been feeling “off” but can’t quite explain why, you’re not alone.

And you don’t have to wait until things feel worse or clearer before you reach out.

If this feels familiar, you’re very welcome to get in touch. You don’t need to have a clear explanation; we can help you make sense of what’s going on and think about what might help.
