Choosing the right therapist can feel overwhelming
You decide you might need some support. You open a directory. And suddenly you’re looking at:
- hundreds of therapists
- different approaches
- different prices
- profiles that all sound… quite similar
You scroll for a bit. You click a few. You tell yourself you’ll come back to it. And then you don’t.
Because it’s not actually about choice
It looks like the problem is having too many options. But most people don’t get stuck because there are too many therapists.
They get stuck because they’re being asked to figure something out at the exact moment they feel least able to.
You’re expected to know things you don’t know
Somewhere along the way, finding a therapist has quietly become something that feels like a decision you’re supposed to get “right”.
- Should it be CBT?
- Psychodynamic?
- Integrative?
- Do you need a specialist?
- What even counts as a specialist?
When you’re already feeling overwhelmed, that kind of decision-making can feel like too much. So instead, you pause. Or you wait. Or you tell yourself you’ll come back to it later.
And everything starts to sound the same
Most profiles are thoughtful and well-written. But when you read enough of them, they start to blur.
Everyone is:
- experienced
- compassionate
- here to support you
Which is true. But it doesn’t necessarily help you decide: “Who is actually right for me?”
What actually helps
It’s not more profiles. It’s not more information. It’s not trying to make the “perfect” choice.
What helps is something much simpler: not having to figure it out on your own.
Having someone take the time to:
- understand what’s going on
- ask the right questions
- and help you think through what might actually help
Not expecting you to arrive with a clear answer. Not expecting you to get it right first time.
You don’t need the right words
People often think they need to explain things properly before they reach out.
But most of the time, it starts with something much simpler:
“I’m not sure what I need”
“I just don’t feel like myself”
“Things feel harder than they should”
That’s enough.
A different way to start
At Cherry Tree Therapy Centre, we often speak to people who feel unsure where to begin. That’s not a problem. It’s where most people are. From there, we can help you make sense of things and talk through what might be the right next step, so you’re not left trying to work it all out alone.
If this sounds familiar
If you’ve found yourself opening tabs, scrolling through profiles, and then quietly closing them again… You’re not doing it wrong. It’s just not meant to be something you figure out on your own.
At Cherry Tree Therapy Centre in Buckhurst Hill and Henley-on-Thames, you don’t have to have everything worked out before you get in touch. We’ll help you make sense of what you need and find the right support, whether that’s in person or online.
